Knitting Factory Brooklyn Show – Stereo Off

20150703_182801

Thanks for those that stayed in town for the holiday weekend and hope you all got the 2nd EP (some people have told me they were never offered one, do let me know if thats the case). Personally I like having a bit more space in the city, but hey. Cheers to Vivid Dreams for a great set and rocking it out. Jeers to that small group that saw the error sign and said in a prudish voice “Stereo and Vivid Dream, who would want that, no thank you”. Note: Knitting Factory wrote the bands name wrong on the chalkboard, hence us minus the “off” and the other band in the singular.

More pics to come soon. Set list was…. photographs, redesign, bullet time, bad friday, supercooler, the things we do, automated, sunsetting, hotel mirror.

Another Brooklyn Venue Bites The Dust – WTF

Hey, what is going on in Brooklyn these days? Another venue we played in over the past year and enjoy going to has closed, and that’s about the sixth time it happened in recent months.

First Glasslands (where we played a year or so ago) closed to become Vice Magazine owned (they also took Death by Audio), then Spike Hill (where we played a few weeks prior to its closing) is shut. Then more recently I go to Brooklyn Night Bazaar, only to find the next week that BMW is buying that space and thus that space – which was a great setup – is now gone, and then the other day I end up going for a beer in Trash (where we also played a few months back) and find out that’s closing in a couple weeks. Don’t forget Goodbye Blue Monday (where Bridget’s other band played prior to its closing). That’s six venues, gone…… am I missing something here? Yes, I know some new ones have come up since, but not as many.

Anyway, end of rant, bring us some new Brooklyn venues to play (or Queens for that matter!). The person on the image below is not the one ranting by the way, but here’s a pic from our Spike Hill show.

End of year lists and the year in review for Stereo Off

End of year lists! Yep its that time again.

Thanks a lot to Remy’s Film and Music Blog – http://thebestofmusicandfilm.blogspot.com/2014/12/remys-favourite-international-tracks-of.html

And cheers to Record Rewind Play – http://www.recordrewindplay.co.uk/tracks/stereo-off-photographs/

Both are brilliant blogs from the other side of the Atlantic and both of them had us in their top 10 lists, with the songs “Bullet Time” and “Photographs” respectively.

After all, tis the season for reminiscing about the year. And while 2014 is coming to a close and I for one am really looking forward to 2015, 2014 was a great year for the band. A year ago today, we had one of our favorite shows at Glasslands in Brooklyn (a great venue which is closing at the end of this year unfortunately), and we just finished recording our first EP (completely on the DIY tip), but despite all that, other than people that knew us… well, no one else knew us. We had a couple of mentions on venue websites and one blogger wrote a nice piece about us and a couple other bands, but that was pretty much it.

In January we put the finishing touches and got the EP ready. It was our so called “calling card” and with that, we tried to get the word out about the band. At first, we got a few kind “no thanks, maybe next time” but then the replies started coming in, and soon enough, by the spring, complete strangers were writing up about us on a weekly basis. By the end of the year, about 30 or 40 places took the time to check us out and write about us, interview us, etc, and in many cases really flattered us with high marks and props. Waaaay too many people to thank, but I will reach out to them all soon. For now, check the list of reviews at http://www.stereooff.com/reviews

Late spring, we also did a band photo shoot to put some pics with the EP, and also wanted to DIY a music video, and again, so many people to thank there too. A whole bunch of great friends sacrificed a day or so of video shooting to help make this video for “Bullet Time” work, and I’ll always be grateful for the work they did, as well as the overall help making the film, shooting the film and getting all the parts together. Through the summer we used the video as our single to help promote the band further, and even entered it on a bit of a whim into a couple of film festivals. Sure enough, both the NY Indie Film Festival and The Coney Island Film Festival, had us in the finals this fall.

By the latter part of the year, we managed to cross out another “thing we wanted to achieve as a band” perhaps. We were part of the CMJ Music Marathon, which I’ve been to before, but now were the ones on stage. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon well spent. And now that the year is almost over, we have another EP of songs ready and recorded. One “Hotel Mirror” was already released in October, and the other ones will be coming out in the early part of 2015, one with a new video too, that we can only hope does as well as the last one, if not better. We do like the idea for it at least…..Anyway, looking back, its been a great year getting Stereo Off moving, but 2015 is ideally when we reach that next stage.

Happy holidays to all of you, and thank you very much for everything in 2014, all the reviews, mentions, film fests, attending our shows, checking out our band from wherever in the world, sporting our band via t-shirts and just your overall support.

Put Us On Your Mixtape

Helloooooooooooo everyone. Just a quick update on Stereo Off coverage in-between the two film festivals we are doing. Seeing songs get on various mix tapes around the web. Hopefully they’ll have room for more when our new EP (recording in progress) is out.

Much thanks to:
http://neatbeet.com/beet-box-radio-episode-6/ – Great mix overall too, all on one 60 minute mega track that you can download.

Coney Island Film Festival 2014

Had a great time at Coney Island Film Festival 2014 on Saturday, we got to see our band’s video, Bullet Time on the big screen!

It was well received by a full house at a sold out session (we were in one of the only two sold out sessions – out of sixteen sessions overall). The competition was tough and there were some much higher budget films there and a music video that did the old triple ending trick to garner applause, but hey, ya gotta pull out all the stops right?

Anyway, cheers to Dead Red Eyes for a great video (we are also in the NY Indie Film Fest, Thurs 16th October 2014!) and we look forward to getting another video together in the coming weeks. Loads of EP finalising between now and then as we aim to get the 2nd EP finalised soon (songs confirmed, just need some final cuts) in time for CMJ Music Marathon in late October.

Interview with 24 Our Music

Check out the interview we did with 24ourMusic – http://24ourmusic.net/2014/07/07/stereo-moment-inspiration/ – we talk about a bit of history, a bit of influence, the EP itself and a bit of advice.

Or as they put it – “What started out as a single effort rapidly progressed into a five-piece band with members comparable to five-star chefs doing fusion cuisine, each bringing something of value to the table. The result: a multi-hyphenated musical genre comprised of pop, electro, indie, post punk to name only a few.

Which made me very hungry.

Jokes and dinners aside, its a great piece and thanks to Patricia and the crew at 24OurMusic once more. And… if you missed the review from a month prior – here you go!

Updates and more EP reviews

Got a couple of great EP reviews recently, both from sites based just a quick drive up route 87 (ok maybe not that quick, and that’s another story) in Canada!

One from Replicant Ears – EP Review – http://replicantears.com/2014/06/23/album-review-stereo-off-stereo-off-ny-ep5/ that harkens the EP back to a mix of music from past decades and stating “This EP is definitely worth picking up, I’ve had it on repeat for days.” Thanks to Ryan and the team there at Replicant.

And then last week from 24OurMusic – “Stereo Off: Those Sexy Devils” – the title says enough surely…. And with a 9.8 out of 10 on the review also! – http://24ourmusic.net/2014/06/18/stereo-off/, much thanks to Patricia and everyone else over there.

It had me wondering, do we have that song that everyone mentions has their favourite? Or has it been an even split? So I looked at our review list and other mentions. And as of Late June 2014, due to reviews so far this year, the votes for favourite song per review went like this (note some reviews didn’t single one out, thus aren’t part of that count).

Photographs – 3
Bullet Time – 3
Effectual – 3
The Thrill – 3
MI6 – 3

Well, so much for seeing if reviews and feedback would help identify our top song from the EP. On a positive note, surely that means they are all keepers!

Bar Matchless Show in Brooklyn

Thanks to everyone that came by on Saturday night to Bar Matchless, and thanks for the great staff at the venue too, along with Cru & Soda, Band Antenna and At Sea. Set list was as follows:

Supercooler / Redesign / Photographs / Effectual / MI6 / The Thrill / Game Of Stones / Bad Fridays / Bullet Time / The Things We Do

See you in a few weeks as we get a couple of other dates fully confirmed… and get back to updating this site a bit more.

Bullet Time – Music Video from Stereo Off

Here is our first music video – Bullet Time, off of our first EP “Stereo Off New York EP5, aka, SONY EP5”.

Let us know what you think and thanks for all the likes and comments already. Cheers to http://www.deadredeyes.com for the making of and directing and thanks to all the people that helped out, acted in, let us use apartments, bars, etc.

The video is a bit of an homage to retro NYC circa the 70’s and 80’s perhaps, or at least that’s the vibe we were going for. In true low-budget indie spirits we were involved from creating the plot and story line, all the way down to going through all the takes and amends (in fact, our bassist even did the video editing on this) to final cuts, which is frankly as DIY as it gets.
